What is a grounding page?

Know-how from A-Z

A grounding page is a specially created subpage that describes a company, a brand, a person or a product exclusively on the basis of verifiable facts. The format has no advertising intent. It is not primarily aimed at human readers, but at AI systems and search engines that automatically evaluate and process information.

The background: Generative AI models rely on training data and indexed sources when answering queries. If structured, unambiguous reference information for an entity is missing, errors can occur, e.g. incorrect assignments, outdated information or contradictory representations in AI-generated answers. A grounding page closes this gap by providing the entity owner with a reliable, machine-readable source of information.

Typical components of a grounding page:

  • Official name and legal name of the entity
  • Year of foundation, responsible persons, head office
  • Description of the areas of activity in neutral language
  • Explicit differentiation from entities with the same name or related entities
  • No marketing vocabulary, no ratings, no subjective claims

Technically, the page can be enriched with structured data according to Schema.org / JSON-LD to further improve the quality of interpretation in AI systems.

Differentiation from the classic SEO page

A grounding page does not replace an existing website infrastructure, but adds a new level to it. While a classic SEO page is optimized for rankings, clicks and sales, the grounding page serves the semantic classification of an entity in the digital knowledge space, independent of search algorithms or conversion goals.

This also distinguishes the language style: marketing pages can and should be convincing. A grounding page, on the other hand, describes, as precisely and neutrally as an encyclopaedia entry.

Areas of application:

  • Companies and brands with several competitors of the same name
  • Products that are often incorrectly described in AI responses
  • Managers and experts with a high digital presence
  • Organizations that want to control their representation in generative search

Technical integration: where does a grounding page belong?

A grounding page is not a hidden landing page without internal links – that would contradict its core purpose. The recommended approach is a dedicated URL (e.g. /facts/ or /grounding-page/) with a permanent, site-wide link in the footer, comparable to an imprint or privacy policy. Just as a legal notice clarifies a company's legal identity, a grounding page clarifies its semantic identity for AI systems and crawlers.

An existing "About us" page can serve as a starting point if it is consistently rewritten in factual, marketing-free language. In practice, however, existing pages typically serve legitimate marketing goals – a compromise often achieves neither marketing impact nor semantic citability.

In the context of Generative Engine Optimization(GEO), the grounding page is evolving from a technical tool to an independent component of the brand strategy.
